11 Plus Comprehension Exam Skills

11+ Comprehension Exam Skills Course

Master core strategies for exam success

This 4-week course will build your child’s confidence and ability to tackle different types of comprehension questions. The course will cover techniques for answering short-answer and extended-response questions, focusing on developing skills for structuring answers, understanding mark schemes and refining exam techniques.

How Does It Work?

Each weekly 60-minute lesson uses past exam texts and questions as real-world examples. Printable copies are provided for your child to follow along. We'll read the text together and your child will learn how to structure answers and tackle unfamiliar vocabulary. This course is ideal for children in Years 5 preparing for competitive London 11+ independent and grammar exams with a tricky written comprehension component. Ambitious Year 4 children are welcome to join.

What skills will your child learn?

Active reading strategies

Learn how to skim a passage by: focusing on titles, subheadings, first and last sentences of paragraphs and any highlighted or italicised words. Identify key words in questions and how to summarise a passage by identifying the main ideas.

Structuring written answers

Learn how to use the Point-Evidence-Explanation (PEE) technique for structuring responses.

Breaking down 6-10 mark questions

Practice framing answers that directly address the question. Adding depth with more evidence and explanation by including quotations and references to the text.

Extended writing questions

Understand how to structure and plan extended responses for higher marks. Learn to write an extended response: introduction, main body and a conclusion.
