Case Study: Nia From Bright Reader to Confident 11+ English Candidate
Background
When Nia first joined us for English tuition in Creative Hare in Year 4, she was a bright and engaged student at a London state school. English was an additional language, and although she was performing well across her subjects, Maths was her clear favourite.
At home, Nia already enjoyed reading and would happily work her way through a stack of books. She particularly loved fast-paced, humorous stories and action-filled page-turners. This enthusiasm for reading was a wonderful starting point.
However, as is often the case with able and independent readers, Nia’s Mum has noticed that while Nia read quickly and confidently, there were opportunities to deepen her engagement with language and strengthen her written expression.
Early Assessment
It was clear Nia had strong ideas and a natural curiosity about stories, but two key areas would benefit from careful development.
Creative and Descriptive Writing
Nia’s writing communicated her ideas clearly, but her sentences tended to remain quite simple. In selective school English assessments, examiners are looking for writing that feels vivid, controlled and engaging, with varied sentence structures and thoughtful vocabulary choices.
Developing these creative skills became an important focus from the get-go.
Vocabulary and Comprehension Inference
Although Nia read regularly, she sometimes followed a pattern we often see with bright readers: moving quickly through the text and skimming past unfamiliar vocabulary in order to keep the story flowing.
While this allowed her to enjoy books, it meant she occasionally missed the nuance and subtlety of language that are essential for higher-level comprehension.
To address this, we began introducing carefully chosen 10+ comprehension texts, allowing Nia to engage with richer language and more sophisticated question types.
Building Confidence and Depth
During a weekly online tutorial, we worked steadily to develop both creative writing and comprehension skills.
In creative writing sessions, Nia practised:
- Expanding simple sentences into more expressive ones
- Varying sentence openings and structures
- Adding detail to create atmosphere and character
Rather than simply correcting work, we focused on discussing her use of language, helping Nia understand how small changes could make her writing far more engaging.
At the same time, comprehension lessons focused on developing inference skills and thoughtful responses.
We explored:
- What the author was suggesting beneath the surface
- Where to start when faced with an unfamiliar word/phrase to describe
- How to support answers with clear evidence from the text
This approach gradually helped Nia move from brief answers to more developed and self-assured explanations, a key skill for selective school English papers.
A Key Milestone
During this period, Nia decided to sit the 10+ assessment for a London independent school.
Receiving a letter of acceptance was a wonderful moment for both Nia and her family. More importantly, it gave them confidence that she was capable of thriving in a competitive academic environment.
With that reassurance, the family decided to continue working towards the 11+ pathway.
Preparing for the 11+
As Nia moved into the next stage of preparation, lessons became increasingly focused on 11+ English papers, while maintaining the thoughtful, supportive approach that had helped her develop confidence.
We worked in carefully structured blocks of creative writing and comprehension.
Creative Writing:
Developing narrative techniques such as:
- Creating atmosphere in settings
- Writing engaging story openings
- Developing believable characters
- Varying sentence structure
Over time, Nia’s writing became more expressive and far more vivid.
Comprehension:
At the same time, we worked through a range of comprehension papers, focusing on:
- Discussing more complex texts
- Recognising different question types
- Explaining reasoning clearly and fully
- Supporting answers with evidence from the passage
Before introducing time pressure, we first ensured that Nia felt comfortable working through entire English papers thoughtfully and confidently.
Independent Learning Between Lessons
A particularly important element of Nia’s progress was her commitment to independent study between sessions. She regularly:
- Used an online platform regularly
- Started to enjoy reading more ambitious books
- Collected interesting words to discuss in lessons
- Practised using new vocabulary into her writing
Over time, Nia developed a much richer and more confident vocabulary, which began to appear naturally in both her comprehension responses and creative writing.
Final Note
Through steady weekly work and Nia’s own dedication, her English skills developed significantly.
By the time she reached the later stages of preparation, she was able to:
- Engage confidently with challenging literary texts
- Provide thoughtful, well-developed comprehension answers
- Write imaginative and engaging creative pieces
- Use a wide and increasingly sophisticated vocabulary
All of this consistent effort culminated in multiple school offers including Godolphin & Latymer, Francis Holland Sloane Square, Kingston Grammar, Putney High, Wimbledon High and Alleyn’s, giving Nia and her family several excellent options for the next stage of her education.
Creative Hare helps high-achieving children thrive in 11+ English. Often excelling in maths, many top-set students are less secure in creative writing, and confidence can dip as Year 5 and homework demands increase. We strengthen structured writing, exam technique and thinking skills. Our teaching empowers students to perform consistently, stay confident, and excel in 11+ English for London’s most competitive independent schools.
