Case Study: Student M — Her 11+ English Preparation Journey

Background

Student M began working with Creative Hare in Year 5. She attended a private school and was performing very well academically across the board. Having recently moved to London from abroad, she was also adapting to a new academic environment and the particular demands of the UK independent school 11+ system.

Like many able students I’ve met, Student M had always found schoolwork straightforward. Her ISEB pre-test preparation was going very well. While she was conscientious and capable, the experience of being stretched academically — something required by competitive 11+ entrance exams — was still new to her and required an adjustment period.

Her family had mentioned several possible target independent schools, though nothing had been firmly decided at that stage. Student M also maintained a full extracurricular schedule and was accustomed to performing at a high level in many areas of her life.

During our early sessions, her strengths were immediately clear:

  • Highly studious and self-motivated
  • Strong mathematical thinker
  • Confident and focused in structured tasks
  • An outstanding reader
  • Used to achieving highly in school assessments

However, it was also evident that a common trait among academically strong pupils was that creative self-expression felt unfamiliar to them.

In English lessons at school, Student M was comfortable answering straightforward comprehension questions. Yet when faced with the more nuanced demands of 11+ papers — particularly open-ended comprehension responses and imaginative writing tasks — she often felt uncertain about what to write.

This manifested as hesitation. Despite her ability, she would occasionally default to thinking:
“I don’t know how to do this.”

Approach

We focused on helping Student M feel more comfortable in creative expression. For student M, this meant a weekly tutorial that consisted of comprehension and creative writing blocks.

  • Creative Writing
I worked with student M to develop confidence in shaping her own ideas — exploring character, atmosphere and narrative voice at a pace that felt manageable and calm rather than overwhelming.
  •  11+ Comprehension
We focused on interpreting question types, discussing what the question was asking of her and simple sentence starters to help frame her responses.

The emphasis in the early months was not speed but removing the psychological barrier that can appear when capable students encounter unfamiliar challenges.

Progress Over Time

After approximately three to four months of consistent weekly English tutorials, an important shift began to occur.

The initial hesitation began to give way to a self-assured mindset. Student M approached complex inference questions with curiosity rather than fear.

Her comprehension answers became more thoughtful and precise, and in creative writing she engaged with her natural creativity. Rather than searching for the “correct” answer, she was increasingly willing to explore and develop her own voice.

This change did not come from pressure, but from growing academic confidence.

Once that foundation was in place, student M applied herself with remarkable focus — often exceeding expectations in the depth of her work. Student M performed exceptionally across her competitive entrance exams, securing multiple offers including being awarded an academic scholarship.

Final Note

Student M’s experience highlights something we often observe with bright students preparing for selective schools:

Academic ability alone is rarely the whole picture. The 11+ rewards students who can think independently, interpret subtle questions and express ideas clearly under unfamiliar conditions.

For students who have previously found schoolwork easy, learning how to engage with challenges can be a valuable part of the preparation process.

Creative Hare helps high-achieving children thrive in 11+ English. Often excelling in maths, many top-set students are less secure in creative writing, and confidence can dip as Year 5 and homework demands increase. We strengthen structured writing, exam technique and thinking skills. Our teaching empowers students to perform consistently, stay confident, and excel in 11+ English for London’s most competitive independent schools.
