Gently Guiding Your Child's Ambition

11 Plus English exams

English Entrance Exams for Selective Schools

Common Mistakes in 11+ English — and How We Support Your Child

It is natural to wonder whether success in 11+ English comes down to ability. Children who secure places at their preferred schools are not simply “better” at English — often they have developed strong comprehension, clear expression, and confidence in exam conditions over time, with careful support. Even able pupils can lose marks through common habits such as:

  • Quoting too much of the text.
  • Not explaining word meanings in context.
  • Rushing through questions.
  • Not reflecting on answers.
  • With consistent guidance, these patterns can be gently improved, helping children feel confident, prepared, and in control.
